Amethyst from Morocco is a purple variety of quartz (SiO₂), colored by trace amounts of iron and natural irradiation. Moroccan amethyst typically ranges from soft lavender to deep violet, sometimes with reddish or smoky undertones.
It commonly forms as hexagonal prismatic crystals, often lining geodes or growing in clusters on a contrasting matrix. Crystals are usually transparent to translucent with a vitreous (glassy) luster. Amethyst has a Mohs hardness of 7, making it durable and suitable for both display and jewelry use.
Notable Moroccan localities include areas near Sidi Rahal and other Atlas Mountain deposits. Moroccan specimens are appreciated for their rich color saturation, well-defined crystal points, and attractive natural formations.
